Why do kids love Bob? We suspect it is because
Bob the Builder's world is like the real world with some delightful fantasy
in the mix. Bob the Builder's work as a building contractor, a fix-it man,
is one that has fascinated kids for generations. Besides his partner, Wendy,
his hard hat and his tool kit, Bob has five loveable talking machines: Scoop
the digger, Muck the bulldozer, Lofty the crane, Roley the steamroller and
Dizzy the cement mixer. All are Bob the Builder's helpers and pals who put
their heads together to solve problems with cooperation and teamwork -
excellent values for children to learn early.
Another thing we suspect kids like about Bob the Builder is that he doesn't
talk down to them. Whether in his home, yard or on the job, Bob is always
himself, a nice guy, who has intelligent, straightforward and believable
conversations with the other characters. How many of us, as kids, wished our
parents, teachers or adult acquaintances had talked to us as equals, rather
than with baby talk or condescending attitudes?
Of course, kids are always intrigued by gadgets and machines they see being
used in the adult world. Bob the Builder uses these same machines and modern
gadgets like mobile phones, computers and faxes in his business, too.
Most importantly, kids enjoy the show while learning that being a real-life
'Bob the Builder' has its ups and downs, but having a "can do" approach
solves even big problems. As Bob and friends say, "Can we fix it?" "Yes, we
can!"
